Pulling Strings
Gedalya Folk Rock Rabbi
Years ago, when I was in Israel searching for something deeper, I had a conversation with a wise man that’s stuck with me ever since. He told me something simple but profound: everything we do in this physical world—every action we take—creates ripples that come back to us, whether as blessings or, G-d forbid, the opposite. And it’s not just about us personally; our choices help shape the world we all live in. G-d has gifted us the ultimate creative power: free will. We get to help make the world what it is—but with that power comes responsibility and consequences. This idea resonated with me for years, and in 2018—about two decades after that conversation—I wrote a song called “Pulling Strings” inspired by it. I’m excited to share that song with you alongside this essay, but first, I want to talk about how we can bring more awareness to our actions and their impact. When I say “actions,” I don’t just mean what we do with our hands and feet. Our speech matters just as much, and on an even higher level, so do our thoughts. Most of us can’t control which thoughts enter our minds—those come and go on their own. But we do have the power to decide what we focus on and what we dwell on once a thought arrives. In a way, the thoughts that pop up are a window into who we are, but what we do with them—that’s where our real choice lies.
